Massage during pregnancy is therapeutic bodywork which focuses on the special needs of the mum-to-be as her body goes through the dramatic changes brought about by pregnancy.

The popularity of pre-natal massage is the result of a trend towards a higher level of wellness, especially during pregnancy. Many women are postponing childbirth until they have achieved other goals such as careers and relationships. Pregnancy massage can be carried out in different ways. Mums-to-be can lie on their side, or their belly (using a specially shaped pillow that allows them to lie flat on their stomachs).

After the first 22 weeks of pregnancy, lying flat on your back can cause pressure on deep blood vessels due to the growing baby, thereby reducing circulation to both you and your baby. To avoid this problem pillows can be used to ensure that when you are lying down, you are properly supported, relaxed and comfortable.

Massage during pregnancy is usually safe for most mums-to-be. As your therapist, I will want to know if you are having any problems or complications. If you are, then I will ask that you seek approval for massage from your primary health care provider before proceeding with any body work.
