Q1. How does Indian Head Massage work? 

A1. The treatments involves massage, shiatsu and acupressure techniques on upper back, shoulders, arms/hands, neck, scalp and face. This relaxes tense areas but, at the same time, helps to rebalance the energy, clearing any areas of negativity.

Q2. What is Indian Head Massage used for? 

A2. Indian Head massage may bring about:

  • General feeling of wellbeing, calmness and relaxation

  • Dispersal of toxins from tense, knotted muscles

  • Stimulation and improvement of circulatory and lymphatic systems

  • Improvement of joint mobility

  • Higher levels of alertness and concentration

It may also help relieve or alleviate:

  • Tension headaches

  • Eyestrain / eye problems

  • Tinnitus and other ear problems

  • Insomnia

  • Neck and shoulder stiffness

  • Sinusitis and congestion

  • Hair loss/thinning

  • Scalp tension

  • Mental tiredness/anxiety/stress

Q3. Are there any side effects?

A3. There are no side effects with Indian Head massage.

Q4. Can I have Indian Head Massage treatment if I am pregnant?

A4. It is recommended that you avoid treatment during the first trimester of pregnancy, (the first 12 weeks). There are many benefits to having treatments during pregnancy.  Indian Head massage is enjoyed by many pregnant women as they find the sitting position very comfortable as opposed to therapies where they are required to lie flat.

Q5. Do you use oils on the scalp?

A5. They can be used but it can leave the hair very oily and often people are going back to the office or going out. However, if you would like the oils, this is no problem and it can enhance the treatment.

Q6. Is it safe?

A6. Yes, however, massage should not be applied if you are suffering from any of the following conditions:

  • Abnormal blood pressure

  • Recent head or neck injury

  • History of thrombosis or embolism

  • Diabetes

  • Skin infections

  • Scalp infections

  • Osteoporosis or arthritis of the upper spine

Q7. Are there any conditions which contra-indicate Indian Head Massage?

A7. Indian head massage can safely be used for most conditions however we would not treat in the event of the following recent head or neck injuries, recent operations, drug or alcohol intoxication, unstable diabetes, unstable high or low blood pressure and a dysfunction of the nervous system ie meningitis. The following conditions can be treated but do discuss with your practitioner prior to the session as caution may need to be exercised. Conditions where there is a dysfunction of the nervous system ie loss of skin sensation, fainting or dizzy spells, spastic conditions, history of thrombosis or embolism, epilepsy and in the event of a migraine attack at the time of treatment.
