Q1. What can massage do for me? A1. One of the most common requests for massage is due to stress and fatigue. People are more inclined to take more care of their cars, but neglect their health and well being. People constantly place enormous demands on themselves, putting their health in jeopardy which causes many diseases, which are preventable. Massage introduces the experience of touch, putting you back into connection towards health, your natural state of being. Q2. I suffer from high blood pressure, can I receive a massage? A2. Studies have shown that regular gentle massage can help to reduce blood pressure because in simple terms, it relaxes and creates a general feeling of wellbeing. Q3. I suffer from eczema, can I receive a massage? A3. Studies have shown that flares in the condition are associated with stress and anxiety. Massage can help alleviate stress and anxiety; however it is important to incorporate massage with relaxation techniques and changes in lifestyle to effectively reduce stress in the long term. If the skin is not inflamed, the affected areas can be massaged. Q4. I am pregnant, can I receive a massage? A4. The short answer is yes, please refer to the pregnancy massage FAQs page. Q5. What should I expect in my first massage? A5. I will require you to fill out a health history form. Afterwards I will begin by asking you general questions to establish what areas you would like worked on, if there are any conditions needing to be addressed and to determine if massage is appropriate for you. Q6. Where will my massage take place? A6. Your massage or bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort. Q7. What do I wear during massage? A7. Depending on the primary technique used, you may or may not need to undress. For a full body massage, most people undress completely. However, you may choose to wear underwear. I will give you privacy to undress, and you will be covered with a sheet and blanket at all times except the area being worked on. Q8. What do I do during massage therapy treatment? A8. Make yourself comfortable. If I want to adjust your position, I will either move you or will ask you to move. Otherwise, change your position anytime to make yourself more comfortable. Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a session; others prefer to talk. It's up to you. It is your massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. Do not hesitate to ask questions at any time. Q9. How will the massage feel? A9. It usually depends on the techniques used. I use a form of Swedish massage. In a general Swedish massage, your session may start with broad, flowing strokes (effleurage) that will help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension. Often, a light oil or lotion is used to allow your muscles to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin. Do not hesitate to ask questions or mention if you feel any discomfort so that the massage therapist can use another approach or technique. Q10. How will I feel after the massage therapy treatment? A10. Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage.
